CATS serves the Northeastern Illinois region, consisting of
Cook,
DuPage,
Kane,
Kendall,
Lake,
McHenry and
Will, and Aux Sable township in
Grundy county.
Population, Employment & Households
Our region’s current population is 8.15 million. (2000 Census)
Regional employment currently stands at 4.4 million. (2000 Census)
There are currently 2.9 million households in the area served by CATS. (2000 Census)

Growth Patterns
The population of our region is expected to reach 10.1 million by the year 2030.
Regional employment is expected to top 5.6 million by 2030.
The number of households in the CATS region is expected to reach 3.7 million by 2030.

Travel Statistics
Daily
24.6 million daily trips are expected to be made in 2005 – this includes people walking, cycling, driving and using transit. (CATS, 2003 Air Quality Conformity Analysis for 2030 RTP and FY 2004-9 TIP)
1.5 million transit trips were made in the region each day in 2003.
Annual
444 million trips were made on the Chicago Transit Authority system in 2003.
74.8 million trips were made on the Metra system in 2003.
34.7 million trips were made on the Pace bus system in 2003.

Transportation System
24,902 miles of interstate highways, freeways and principal and minor arterials in the seven-county area. (IDOT, 2004 Travel Statistics)
