Chicago Transit Authority

  • Operates 2,017 buses on 152 routes, covering 2,273 route miles with approximately 12,500 posted bus stops.
  • Operates 1,190 cars on seven rapid transit lines covering 289 track miles with 144 stations.
  • Operates 24-hour service on 17 of the bus lines and on two of the seven rapid transit rail routes.
  • Handles an average of almost 1 million bus riders and almost 500,000 rail riders each weekday (1,437,416 total).
  • Provides service to 220 square miles of the City of Chicago and 40 suburbs.

Metra

Pace

  • Serves a population of approximately 5.2 million. (www.pacebus.com)
  • Service area includes 3,446 square miles in suburban Cook County, and DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.
  • Operates fixed-route, paratransit service and Dial-a-Ride service in the six-county region (excludes Kendall County and Grundy County portion).
  • In 2003 Pace serviced 31 million fixed-route passengers, 1.4 million paratransit and Dial-a-Ride passengers and 1.2 million vanpool riders. (Pace, 2005 Final Annual Budget Document)

Illinois State Toll Highway Authority

Illinois Department of Transportation

  • The Chicago region’s highway needs are addressed by IDOT District 1, which is based in Schaumburg. Highway needs for Kendall and Grundy counties are addressed by IDOT District 3, which is based in Ottawa.

Aviation

  • In 2004, O’Hare serviced 75.5 million passengers, 10.8 million of which were international travelers.
  • Midway serviced 19.7 million passengers in 2004; 310,000 of them were international travelers.

Freight

  • Every day in the region an estimated 2.5 million tons of freight are moved by 1,100 freight trains and 37,500 railcars (2003).
  • An estimated 1.9 million tons of freight are delivered daily in the region by medium and heavy-duty trucks (2003).
  • An estimated 68,500 tons of freight are delivered daily via the Great Lakes and inland waterways within the region (1996).

Transportation Safety

  • In 2002 there were 308,507 motor vehicle crashes that occurred in the six-county area comprised of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties. There were 130,483 crashes that occurred in the other 96 counties in the state.
  • More than 50% of all of the motor vehicle collisions in the state of Illinois in 2002 occurred in Cook County.
  • There were 658 traffic-related fatalities in the six-county area in 2002, compared to 762 traffic-related fatalities in the rest of the state.
  • In 2002 there were 85,293 traffic-related injuries in the six-county area.
  • The most common types of crashes in the six-county area in 2002 were (in order): rear end collisions, collisions while turning, collisions involving angled driving and collisions with parked vehicles.
  • Eighty-percent of the traffic collisions in the six-county area in 2002 did not result in any injuries.
