Traffic Projections

Traffic projections are developed based on information you provide: existing Average Daily Traffic (ADT) and your own future traffic estimate for the project.

We compare your information with the results of CATS' most recent regional travel demand analysis. Our travel models use 2030 socioeconomic projections from the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission and assume implementation of CATS' 2030 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) for the Northeastern Illinois area.

CATS traffic projections consider projects only as they appear in the current Transportation Improvement Program and Regional Transportation Plan.

Traffic projections are provided for the year 2030 and reflect growth patterns associated with the development of a new South Suburban Airport.

The following information is intended to clarify traffic projections provided by the Chicago Area Transportation Study to its member agencies.

In order to receive traffic projections, a request letter with supporting information should be mailed to:

Donald Kopec, Acting Executive Director
Attn: Traffic Projections
Chicago Area Transportation Study
233 South Wacker Drive, Suite 800
Chicago, IL 60606

The following information should be included with your written request.

  • A notation (cc:) showing that the member agency of the CATS Policy Committee that is sponsoring the study has received a copy of the request and is aware that it has been made. (e.g. IDOT, Lake County, municipality, etc.) The sponsor will receive the response and you will receive a copy.
  • Location of project (including a map or diagram).
  • Description of existing conditions and proposed improvements.
  • Description of recent or proposed development that may affect the demand on the facility.
  • Existing Average Daily Traffic (ADT) or 24 hour counts on all roadway links that are included in the project (e.g. if an intersection is improved then data on four roadway links is needed). Peak hour and turning movement data should not be used in place of existing ADT.
  • Your estimate of future traffic. (If you have a forecast you've been working with and require a concurrence.)
