Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) cover a wide range of technologies used to improve the movement of people and goods. The goal of ITS deployment is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the transportation system through such actions as increasing traveler safety and reducing congestion. Regional ITS planning in northeastern Illinois is guided by the Advanced Technology Task Force at CATS, while implementation is carried out by numerous agencies around the region.

ITS Plan Documents:

2005 ITS Plan Update (PDF) 1.2 MB - provides a blueprint for ITS investment and deployment in northeastern Illinois for the next 15 years.
Addendum to the 2005 ITS Plan Update (PDF) 568 KB – includes a mapping of the plan projects to the Regional ITS Architecture and a gap analysis.
Summary of 2005 ITS Plan Update (PDF) 627 KB - is a four-page overview of the plan.
1999 Strategic Early Deployment Plan – created the foundation for integrated deployment of advanced transportation technologies across the region.

Regional ITS Architecture:

2002 Regional Architecture – represents a shared vision of how each agency’s ITS deployments will work together over the next 15 years, sharing information and resources to improve the region’s transportation system.
Change Request Form (DOC) 67 KB – is a form to submit when requesting a change to the regional architecture.
Summary of Regional Architecture (PDF) 181 KB – is a four-page overview of the regional architecture in northeastern Illinois.
